Prof Caroline van Niekerk

Caroline van Niekerk is a full Professor of Music Education at the University of Pretoria. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Music and English as well as a teacher's diploma from the University of Stellenbosch. After obtaining two licentiates from the University of South Africa, one in School Music and one in the Theory of Music, she completed her postgraduate studies (M.Mus and PhD) at the University of the Witwatersrand. In addition she holds a variety of qualifications in fields as diverse as translating, editing, television presentation, leadership and negotiating skills. She returned to the University of Pretoria at the beginning of 1996 from her previous post as Director in the South African national Department of Education. Prior to the five years she spent in national government she lectured at a variety of universities, colleges of education and the Pretoria Technikon. She is the author and editor of many publications and has supervised 31 doctoral and 20 Masters' theses to date. She examines nationally and internationally and has been fortunate to have travelled extensively and spoken at conferences over the last nearly twenty years throughout Africa, Europe, the East, the UK, US and Australia. From 1992-1996 she was the elected member for the African continent of the ISME (International Society for Music Education) Board of Directors. As Vice-Chair of the Organising Committee for ISME '98, the biennial world conference held in Pretoria, she was responsible for all the arrangements for the Conference programme, widely acclaimed as one of the best ever. In 2000/2001 she was the first President of the Pan-African Society for Music Education, founded in Harare, Zimbabwe in August 2000, and was re-elected as Secretary General of the Society for the biennium 2001-2003.

Dr. Monica Forret, 
Monica Forret joined the faculty of St. Ambrose University in 1997. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri (1995), where she majored in Human Resources and Organizational Behavior.
Monica has published articles in Group & Organization Management, Organizational Dynamics, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Business and Psychology, and Leadership & Organization Development Journal on recruiting, interviewing, networking, and mentoring processes. Currently, she is spending her time researching networking behaviors, and has presented papers at the Academy of Management, Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and Midwest Academy of Management conferences on this topic. She has been examining the outcomes of networking for managerial and professional employees, and is currently investigating individual and organizational factors that influence networking behaviors.

Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, Monica worked as an auditor for Deloitte and Touche, and later for The Prudential Insurance Company of America in the internal audit function.

Monica is a CPA and received her bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University where she majored in accounting. Before coming to St. Ambrose, Monica was on the faculty at Long Island University – C. W. Post. She also taught at Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland, as part of a joint International MBA Program.

At St. Ambrose University, Monica teaches primarily Human Resource Management and Research Methods I in the DBA Program and MBA courses in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior.

Richard E. Mayer

Richard E. Mayer is Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he has served since 1975. He received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973, and served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology at Indiana University from 1973 to 1975. His research interests are in educational and cognitive psychology. His current research involves the intersection of cognition, instruction, and technology with a special focus on multimedia learning and problem solving. He is past-President of the Division of Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association, former editor of the Educational Psychologist and former co-editor of Instructional Science, former Chair of the UCSB Department of Psychology, and the year 2000 recipient of the E. L. Thorndike Award for career achievement in educational psychology. He is on the editorial boards of 10 journals mainly in educational psychology. He is the author of 18 books and more than 250 articles and chapters, including Learning and Instruction (2003) and Multimedia Learning (2001).
