TITLE
What Speakers should know about learning
NAME
Richard John

Richard John is an event guru, according to public and private organisations, trade associations, academic bodies, suppliers, organisers, the MICE magazines and his mum.

As well as training, consulting, presenting, writing, researching, lecturing and dog-walking he is also a speaker at numerous events around the world, and anywhere that people stop to catch their breath.

He’s got so many professional qualifications to his name. Listing them becomes tedious. At the moment he’s currently finishing his MSc in Event Management at Leeds Metropolitan University in England.

He works extensively across all aspects of the events industry, but his big feet also lead him to a host of other management and marketing assignments which allow him to offer a much wider view of the whole issue of face to face communications. No silo thinking here.

His approach to life – and clients - is honest, open, challenging, thought-provoking, unbiased, undiplomatically, and (as you’ve probably guessed) – quite irreverent.

Seven rules for designing more innovative conferences

NAME
Ed Bernacki

Working with Ed Bernacki

Ed Bernacki's presentations are colourful and insightful. His style is informative and designed to get people to think in new ways. He often opens presentations by asking, "How many of you attend workshops or conferences like this, make notes, and never look at them again?" Generally one half of every audience admits - "yes that's me!" He then provides insights for listening and recording ideas in new ways.

His presentations are designed to be colourful, interesting and non-traditional. You can download a sample of recent handout version of a presentation.

Workshops - the ideal setting is round tables with participants expecting to participate. A data projector and screen are required. Ed Bernacki brings his own computer and materials. For large room settings, a lapel microphone is required. The use of podium is preferred to help manage his notes. Also, at least one flip chart is required.

Keynote sessions - Ed Bernacki will use a PowerPoint presentation. However, the room lighting should not be dimmed to the extent that hinders the ability of participants to record their ideas. His preference is a lapel microphone. He does prefer to have a podium on stage to help manage his notes. A flipchart is also required on stage.

The potential power of music in meetings

NAME
prof Caroline van Niekerk

Music’s power has been both recognised and documented, certainly since the time of the Ancient Greeks. The power of face-to-face meetings, as opposed to communication by various other means - even aided by a battery of technological developments – is also widely accepted.  This is despite it frequently being noted that meetings can take an inordinate amount of simultaneous time from high-level personnel and can be extremely inefficient - it even being remarked that, if you don’t want results, have endless meetings about a matter!  So, if we have a goal of efficient and effective meetings – why not judiciously use music as an aid in the process?

Well-known research on topics such as multiple intelligences (including the musical intelligence) and the so-called Mozart effect demonstrates the benefits of involvement in music for everyone, and not only for the so-called musically ‘talented’ few. Prenatally, music is now extensively used; few parents and/or teachers at the pre – and primary school levels dispute the importance of music education.  The social and cultural identity of teenagers is largely intertwined with their music; music is capable of providing joy and interest right through to the grave, soothing the sick and enhancing the lives of the elderly. Why, therefore, is music not extensively used before, during and after meetings?  This paper explores the effects which music can have in context such as meetings, and in the paper’s presentation, practical demonstrations will be given, and sound examples played, from a wide variety of genres.

The Future of Facilitation

NAME
Jon Jenkins
facilitator guides group processes to bring forth the expertise already existent in the group. In doing so, the facilitator seeks to strengthen groups by allowing them to perceive and discipline their unique strengths and weaknesses. The nature of the service the facilitator offers is catalytic. For both the facilitator and the coach, it is the performance of the client(s) that is the subject of their intervention. This involves a detailed focus on the way individuals and groups interact.Facilitation focuses primarily on processes in which information is exchanged among the participants in a group. The facilitator 'eases' this exchange, using structured techniques and communication skills. The facilitator knows how to draw the answers out of those who know them best - the people doing the job. The facilitator asks questions, guides a group to consensus, and uses information to demonstrate the need for action.
