IMIC presentation In Athens Greece – February 7-8th 2007

Report by Maarten Vanneste

3rd International Conference

MARKETING DESTINATIONS

Incentive Trips, Team building Events and Corporate entertainment.

I was on of the speakers and I was invited by Tasso Pappas.

The IMIC conference is organized by a number of parties including SITE and with the support from the Minister of Tourism in Greece and a large number of sponsors including IMEX.

The presentation took place right after lunch on Day 2 Thursday February 8th.

The conference only uses one room in theatre and every session has a panel. On speaker is the 40minute key note for that panel and then there are 3 or 4 shorter speakers totalling into a 2hr session.

Our session was called SESSION 4 and was moderated by Vassilis theoharakis; an ASSOCIATE Professor in Alba graduate school in Greece and Aston Business School in the UK.

I was proud to be the 40 minute key note and had an audience of around 120, a group of them students. I spoke about the differences between incentives and meetings and introduced the idea of the Brain Age. Than I introduced the Meeting Content Matrix and the Meeting Support Matrix, followed by a number of examples to enhance learning, networking and motivation.

The presentation went smooth, audience laughed a few times, we had some minor interaction and no questions were asked except one from the panel moderator.

The PPT is 58 slides, 2mb and is available upon request.

After the presentation, I was contacted by Caroline Dow who works on 2 SITE conferences and would like to see me speak there.

It is still somewhat challenging to find the connection with the incentive industry, and to see the value for Meeting Support Institute and its members. Rodolfo Musco (Motivation and Events Milan, Italy), who was there too, informed me that 80% of all incentive trips have a meeting of 3hrs or more built into the program.

I would assume that under pressure of different circumstances, some of our members are more obvious incentive suppliers while others are more meetings only.

Other people I met, Rob Davidson (UK), with whom I’m talking about developing a curriculum for Meeting Content Management.  Lode Beckers from Belgium was also there.

Conclusion

A successful presentation for a nice size audience, with a request for future speaking.

A long trip (2 nights) for only 40 minutes presentation.
